An Interview with Spike

We sat down with Spike and asked him a few questions...
How did you find your mommy?
Well, I guess my mommy really found me. She came across me when she was visiting a friend. I was playing with my brothers and sisters when she picked me up and cradled me in her arms. I was so comfy that I dozed off right there. I spent one last night with my kitty-mommy and siblings... the next day, my mommy took me to my new home.
How would you describe your personality?
When it's just mommy and me, I'm very comfortable and relaxed. I don't like being picked up or sitting on anyone's lap, but I love a good scritching session... especially scritches on my cheeks and under my chin. When we have visitors, it takes me awhile to warm up to them. And I don't like strangers at all. I promptly hide under the bed or on my cat tree when strangers are here.
What is the most unusual thing you do?
Well, I have this position I flip my body into. My mommy calls it my "signature move". I lie on my back and then throw my back legs over my head and grip the carpet with my back toes. This is the BEST position for wrestling with "Oliver" and "Crazy Kitty". Sometimes I even use it when I'm trying to get the ball out of my turbo track.
Why are you unique?
Well, my mommy thinks I'm unique for a couple of reasons. She says I'm very well-behaved and also sleep through the night without distubing anyone. I'm also learning English, and I respond to many different English words. Mommy said that from the first week she had me home, I would look at her if she called my name. I prefer words such as "treat" and "brush". I like the brush because although I dislike being groomed, I LOVE the treats I get afterwards. "Kitty-milk" is also on my list of favorite words. And how could I forget "tuna"! Mommy only gives me a taste now and then, but it's wonderful! I also know words such as "Oliver" - who is a stuffed orange kitty that I like to wrestle, and the "red dot", which I love to chase when it comes out of hiding. The "fishing pole", "feather", "mousie", "doortoy", "ribbon", and "featherball" are more of my toys. Mommy just asks me if I want to play with a certain one, and I will usually meow back if I do. I also love to run "upstairs" or "downstairs", depending on where I am at the time. My mommy also thinks it's pretty amazing that if she asks me to "sit", I will. And if she asks me for my "paw", I'll raise one of my front paws for her. I don't know why she's so amazed, it's not that hard! And I always hold out until I see a treat too! Mommy isn't doing so well learning MY language, so I'm adapting to hers as best I can.
What makes you purr?
Well, I purr the most when I knead the fuzzy grey blanket on mommy's bed. I also purr a bit when she gives me a tasty morsel of tuna or wet kitty food... and sometimes when I'm being petted or scratched *just* right.
Where is your favorite place to sleep?
Hmmmm... so many choices! I sleep in a lot of places... anywhere I want really. The places I sleep most are on the couch and recliner, on the top level of my cat tree, and on mommy's bed. I know mommy loves when I sleep on her bed with her, so I'll choose that one.
What do you do to get your mommy's attention?
Sometimes I meow... the more pitiful the meow, the faster mommy comes running! I'll also weave between her legs as she's walking... she always stops in her tracks when I do that! My newest trick is to nip her calf, right below the knee where it's nice and sensitive!
Do you do anything your mommy doesn't know about?
Hehehe... my mommy has NO idea that I've been getting on top of her entertainment center in her bedroom. I have to jump from the floor onto her computer desk, up onto one of her monitors, and then up to the top of the entertainment center. It's about six feet high, and is the highest piece of furniture in the room. I LOVE being up there!
How does your mommy pamper you?
My mommy is always buying me new toys to try out. And she gives me treats after my daily brushing. Sometimes I get kitty-milk while she's making her dinner too. On the days when it's warm or I'm especially sleepy, if I smack my lips a few times, I can get mommy to bring my water bowl over. She'll even dip her finger in it, letting me drink the drops off her finger so I don't have to get up. She also spends time with me, both playing and giving me scritches.
Do you have any nicknames?
Must you ask that? I'm so embarrassed! My mommy has a ton of nicknames for me. I don't even know if I can think of them all off-hand, but some of them are: Spike-Potato (my Uncle Pat actually started calling me this), Spikester, Handsome, Little Guy, Baby, Tough Guy, Baby Boy, Spike-Spike, Mr. Whiskers, Furry, Furbaby, Boldie, Fuzzy, Spike-uhms, and Spikerooni. She also strings some of them together, so I get called Little Furry Guy, Little Handsome Guy, etc.
What is your favorite toy?
Oh... it's hard to choose... it changes so much. Some of my favorites are my fishing pole - either with the sparkly end or the feathery end. I also enjoy my turbo track, featherball, and when the red dot comes out of hiding. Oh, and I can't forget those little shaker mice and milk rings... they're great to chase when mommy throws them. And the new pipecleaners! They're so much fun to chase after and chew! I don't think I can choose just one favorite!
What are your favorite hobbies?
I love lying on the windowsill or on my perch and watching the birdies outside. Sometimes they get so close, I can almost get them! I also like it when mommy plays with me. Especially with the fishing pole and featherball, they're a lot of fun! Oh, and I can't forget the hobby I do most - nap!
Is there anything you dislike?
I really don't like being picked up... I like it better on the ground. And at times, I don't like being pet. Sometimes I like it, but sometimes I don't. I also don't like having to go in my carrier and go on car trips. Especially to see TED (The Evil Doctor). Oh! And when I'm sick, I don't like to take my medicine at all.
Do you do anything that your mommy just doesn't understand?
Well yes... sometimes when I'm being petted, I get really really excited, and then I want to nip at my mommy, I can't help it, I just do! I will also rest in the hottest room in the house during summer, even if my mommy leaves her air conditioner on for me.
Where is your favorite hiding place?
I love hiding under Great-Grampa's bed, and sometimes in his closet. Mommy gets very upset when she finds me in his closet because he tends to lock me in there accidentally. I also like it a lot under Mommy's bed. She has her bed up on elevators, so I have a lot of walking room under there. And on occasion, you can find me hiding in my cat tree's cubby.
